The Disability Projects Initiative (DPI), with support from the Disability Rights Fund (DRF), has developed a policy brief aimed at strengthening the inclusion of persons with disabilities in climate action and implementation of the Kano State Climate Change Policy 2025.
The policy brief was developed during a policy review session held in Kano as part of DPI’s efforts to identify gaps in the state’s climate change policy and provide an advocacy tool for more inclusive climate action.
Speaking during the session, Executive Director of DPI, Abubakar Yusuf, said the review identified several challenges affecting persons with disabilities, particularly limited access to climate-related information and infrastructure.
He said persons with disabilities often do not receive early warning alerts in accessible formats, while some climate-related infrastructure remains inaccessible to them.

Yusuf also identified limited participation of persons with disabilities in the development, planning, monitoring, evaluation and implementation of the state’s climate change policy as another major gap.
He stressed that persons with disabilities should not be viewed merely as beneficiaries of climate interventions but as actors, contributors and key stakeholders in climate action.
According to him, DPI will in October train 20 persons with disabilities as climate ambassadors to sustain advocacy for inclusive climate action across Kano State.
He said the ambassadors would engage government ministries, departments and agencies through advocacy visits, while also using social media, radio and television to raise awareness about the effects of climate change on persons with disabilities.
Yusuf added that the ambassadors would continue their advocacy and awareness activities beyond the project period to promote sustained attention to disability inclusion in climate action.
