The management of Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) has disputed reports by the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) that electricity supply has been restored to the hospital, warning that critical medical services remain at risk.

In a statement issued on Monday, AKTH said that despite KEDCO’s claims, its main hospital buildings are still without power. It noted that vital clinical areas, including intensive care, operating theatres, labour and delivery, and the neonatal unit, are currently running on emergency generators.

“Contrary to reports that power has been restored and that feeders have been separated, our hospital buildings remain without electricity. Critical units continue to depend on emergency arrangements,” the hospital said.

The statement also addressed the ongoing billing dispute with KEDCO, revealing that internal records show an outstanding debt of ₦800 million. AKTH insisted that this reconciled figure differs from what the distribution company has made public.

To safeguard patient care during the blackout, the hospital has rolled out emergency measures, including suspending elective and non-urgent procedures, conserving energy in non-clinical areas, and scaling down administrative operations.

The hospital stressed that commercial disagreements should not be allowed to endanger lives.
“Patient safety and continuity of care remain our top priority. Any billing or commercial dispute must not come at the cost of lives,” the management said.

AKTH pledged to maintain transparency with staff, patients, and the public while efforts to reconcile the outstanding debt with KEDCO continue.
