Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, has called on the Federal Government to revoke the contract for the Kano-Gwarzo-Dayi Road project, citing what he described as the poor performance of the contractor handling the multi-billion-naira project.

The road project involves the expansion of the approximately 100-kilometre Kano-Gwarzo-Dayi Road from a single carriageway to a dual carriageway to improve transportation and ease the movement of agricultural produce across Kano and neighbouring states.

In a letter dated June 8, 2026, addressed to the Minister of Works, Mr David Umahi, Senator Barau expressed concern over the pace of work by CGC Nigeria Limited, the company awarded the contract.

According to the lawmaker, despite substantial allocations to the project under the 2025 and 2026 Appropriation Acts, progress on the road remains unsatisfactory.

He noted that the project received N19 billion in the 2025 budget and N37 billion in the 2026 budget, yet road users continue to face significant challenges due to delays in execution.

Senator Barau described the road as a critical economic corridor linking Kano, Katsina and Kebbi states, stressing that prolonged delays are affecting residents, motorists and businesses that rely on the route.

He urged the Ministry of Works to immediately assess the contractor’s performance and take appropriate action in the public interest.

The senator said the continued delay in delivering the project has subjected thousands of commuters and communities along the corridor to hardship.

As of the time of filing this report, neither the Federal Ministry of Works nor CGC Nigeria Limited had issued an official response to the concerns raised in the letter.

The development is expected to increase scrutiny of federal road projects that have received significant funding but recorded limited progress.
