Kano govt. recruits 600 youths for training to tackle urban crimes

The Kano State Government has commenced training of 380 youths as part of its initiative to address phone snatching, thuggery, and other related crimes in the state.

This was contained in a statement issued on Monday by the Director of Public Relations and Enlightenment, ministry of internal security and special services, Muhd Dahir Idris.

According to the statement, the trainees represent the first batch of 600 volunteers to serve as members of the Special Antiphone Snatching and VIP Protection Guards. They have begun a two-week intensive training at the Kano State Corporate Security Institute in Gabasawa, aimed at equipping them with the skills and discipline needed to support security agencies in maintaining peace and order.

This newspaper reports that the Commandant of the Institute, Retired Captain Muhammad Bello Mai Gaskiya, explained that the programme provides paramilitary training focused on preventing phone snatching, VIP protection, defensive driving, physical fitness, parade drills, and counselling sessions, with lectures from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and Hisbah personnel.

Captain Mai Gaskiya urged trainees to dedicate themselves to the programme, noting that their role would be critical in restoring security across communities in Kano State. Upon completion, trainees will be formally absorbed by the government and receive a monthly stipend.

The statement also recalled that on Saturday, 19th September 2025, the State Commissioner for Internal Security and Special Services, Air Vice Marshal Ibrahim Umaru (Rtd), inspected the facilities at the Gabasawa Corporate Security Institute, including offices, hostels, dining hall, training grounds, and power generation equipment. Umaru commended the facilities and encouraged staff to ensure trainees receive high-standard training.
