No fewer than 320 girls have received training on informed career decision-making at a one-day workshop organised by the Centre for Gender Studies and Girl-Child Education (CGSGCE), College of Education and Legal Studies, Nguru, Yobe State.
The participants were drawn from tertiary institutions as well as junior and senior secondary schools across the state.
Speaking at the workshop, the Provost of the College, Prof. Ali Manzo, said the training was organised to empower the girl-child with the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to make informed career choices and become productive members of society.
According to him, the Centre for Gender Studies and Girl-Child Education is committed to promoting girls’ education and empowerment through life skills acquisition and mentorship programmes.
“The centre remains dedicated to creating opportunities that will enable girls to realise their full potential and contribute meaningfully to national development,” he said.
Delivering a lecture, the Medical Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Nguru, Prof. Hadiza Abdullahi Usman, urged the participants not to allow their backgrounds to limit their aspirations.

“As someone who has dedicated her career to medicine, teaching, mentorship and leadership, I have learned that where a girl is born should never determine how far she can go,” she said.
She described girl-child education as the process of providing girls with equal access to quality education, knowledge, skills and opportunities that enable them to become responsible, productive and successful members of society.
Prof. Hadiza stressed that career decisions made at an early stage play a significant role in shaping future success, noting that Yobe State and Nigeria need educated and competent women across all professions.
Also speaking, the Education Secretary of the Nguru Local Government Education Authority (LGEA), Malam Hamisu Ado, encouraged the participants to remain committed to their education and take advantage of the opportunities provided by the state government.
He commended the Yobe State Government for promoting equal access to education and urged the girls to work hard, discover their talents and pursue careers that would positively impact their communities and the nation.
