The Senate has passed a bill sponsored by Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, to provide a legal framework for the Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education, Kano.

This was contained in a press release signed by Isma’il Mudashir, Special Adviser to the Deputy President of the Senate on Media and Publicity, and issued to newsmen on Tuesday.

The bill was passed during plenary presided over by Senate President Godswill Akpabio. It seeks to establish a statutory framework for the institution’s management, administration and development.

The institution, formerly the Federal College of Education, Kano, was upgraded to a federal university of education following approval by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in September 2024. In May 2025, Tinubu also approved its renaming after the late statesman Yusuf Maitama Sule, following a request by Barau on behalf of the people of Kano.

Presenting the bill, Barau said the legislation was necessary to provide legal backing for the institution and support the development of teacher education in Nigeria.

He recalled making similar efforts during the previous Senate to upgrade federal colleges of education, including those in Kano and Zaria, but said the bills were not assented to by the late President Muhammadu Buhari.

Barau said Tinubu subsequently approved the upgrade of the Kano institution after he presented the request on behalf of his constituents. He added that the President also approved its renaming after Yusuf Maitama Sule.

The deputy Senate president expressed appreciation to Tinubu for approving the institution’s upgrade and renaming, as well as other projects in Kano State.

He cited the approval of the Federal University of Science and Technology in Kabo and the Federal Polytechnic in Rano as additional interventions by the President.

Senate President Akpabio commended Barau for sponsoring the bill and thanked senators for supporting its passage.

Akpabio expressed optimism that Tinubu would assent to the legislation after its transmission to him, providing the Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education with the statutory framework required to fulfil its mandate and contribute to national development.
