The National Universities Commission (NUC), has granted permanent operational licence to Franco-British International University, (FBIU), Kaduna, to enable it to operate as a private university in Nigeria.
The Licence was presented to the President of the FBIU, Prof. Abdullahi Sabo Muhammad by the Director, Inspection and Monitoring, Mrs Justina Emerole, behalf of the Commission’s Executive Secretary, Prof. Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu.
The development is in fulfillment of all requirements laid down in Education–National Minimum Standards and Establishment of Institutions Act, Cap E3 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004, and after a satisfactory mandatory probationary period.
The licence dated 10th July 2026, will enable the FBIU to operate statutorily as a Private University in Nigeria.
In another development, the Commission has also approved a two-year extension of the probationary period on the Provisional Operational Licence of the Canadian University of Nigeria (CUN), Abuja.
The extension, effective from July 10, 2026, is to enable the university to commence academic activities and consolidate its institutional development.
The approval was communicated in a letter dated 23 July 2026, following a comprehensive review of the University’s activities conducted by a team from the Commission from 23 to 25 April 2026.

The review assessed the university’s compliance with the requirements for the establishment and operation of private universities in Nigeria, including the Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS).
Following consideration of the review team’s findings and recommendations, the NUC approved the two-year extension.
The Commission directed the university to expedite preparations towards the commencement of academic activities within the extension period.
It also urged the institution to sustain the progress recorded in the renovation and remodelling of its facilities.
At the expiration of the extension, the NUC will conduct a follow-up verification visit to assess the university’s compliance with the conditions of its Provisional Operational Licence.
The development marks another important step in the institutional development of the Canadian University of Nigeria as it prepares to commence academic activities under the regulatory oversight of the NUC.
