Former Senate Minority Leader, Simon Mwadkwon, has urged the National Assembly to expedite action on the establishment of state police, saying localized policing remains key to addressing Nigeria’s growing insecurity challenges.

Mwadkwon made the call during his first media briefing after emerging victorious in the APC Plateau North senatorial primary election, where he secured over 38,000 votes to defeat his closest rival who polled about 4,000 votes.

Addressing journalists at his Jos North campaign office, the APC chieftain said Nigeria already has sufficient laws to tackle insecurity but lacks proper implementation, adequate manpower and security personnel familiar with local communities.

According to him, officers deployed from distant states often face difficulties understanding local languages, culture and terrain, weakening intelligence gathering and emergency response.

“For us to solve this problem, the National Assembly should as quickly as possible pass the bill establishing state police,” he said.

Mwadkwon also alleged that some individuals within the security system were frustrating efforts to combat insecurity and called for sanctions against unpatriotic personnel undermining operations.

On politics, the former lawmaker called for unity within the All Progressives Congress ahead of the 2027 general elections, describing the recently concluded party primaries as a family affair among party members.

“The primaries were an in-house struggle among brothers and sisters, and now the APC must close ranks and work together for victory in 2027,” he stated.

Popularly known as “Mr. Project,” Mwadkwon highlighted several constituency projects executed during his time in office, including classroom construction in Angwan Rimi, Angwan Rogo, Zaria Road and GSS Kabong, as well as solar-powered streetlights installed in communities, churches and mosques.

He maintained that his political philosophy prioritizes humanity above ethnic and religious differences.

Mwadkwon further thanked party supporters for their confidence in him and pledged to sustain consultations and grassroots engagement across Plateau North ahead of the 2027 elections.
