A fire outbreak has razed a popular household goods market along Murtala Muhammed Road in Kano State, destroying shops and property worth millions of naira.
According to reports, the fire broke out at about 10 p.m. on Thursday as firefighters battle to contain the inferno.
A trader at the market, Kashifu Khalid, said the blaze completely engulfed the market, resulting in heavy losses for business owners.
“We have suffered losses worth millions of naira. We are yet to determine the cause of the fire and can only watch in grief as officials of the fire service work to bring the situation under control,” he said.
Khalid added that the fire spread to the nearby DHL office building, damaging and burning part of its roof.

The affected market, located between the DHL office and FCMB branch on Murtala Mohammed Road, has been in existence for more than 30 years. It is known for the sale of household and interior decoration items, including curtains, chairs, carpets, air conditioners, rugs, refrigerators, television sets and office furnishings.
As of the time of filing this report, the exact cause of the fire and the extent of the damage had yet to be officially determined.
Officials of the Kano State Fire Service are expected to provide further details on the incident and the estimated value of losses incurred.
