The Disability Projects Initiative, DPI, a Kano-based non-governmental organization, has concluded a 2-day capacity building training for Persons with Disabilities on climate change mitigation and adaptation in Kano State.
The training, held on August 10th and 11th, 2026, is the third batch under DPI’s ongoing project, with 25 participants drawn from across Kano State.
Organized with support from the Disability Rights Fund, the program focused on three key objectives: understanding climate-related hazards and their impact on PWDs, adopting personal adaptation and mitigation measures, and pushing for disability-inclusive climate policies.
Participants were drawn from various clusters of the disability community, including persons with physical disabilities, visual and hearing impairments, albinism, and dwarfism.

Speaking at the close of the training, DPI Project Manager, Saifullahi Mukhtar Sadiq, urged participants to apply the knowledge gained.
He said the training was designed to equip PWDs with the necessary skills to understand climate change impacts and to ensure their active involvement in climate action programming and implementation.
The 2-day session was facilitated by renowned scholars and climate advocates. Participants were taken through 13 modules covering disability inclusion, climate hazards, mitigation and adaptation strategies, and self-care during climate emergencies.
Participants expressed appreciation to DPI and the Disability Rights Fund, describing the training as a critical opportunity for inclusion of PWDs in climate action and advocacy.
DPI is currently implementing a project on empowering Persons with Disabilities on Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Strategies in Kano and across Northern Nigeria.
