The CITAD One Million Trees campaign has received the support of the Kano State Council of Ulama, which has pledged to mobilise residents to plant trees and combat climate change.
The council’s chairman, Sheikh Ibrahim Khalil, made the pledge on Tuesday when a team from the campaign visited the council in Kano for an advocacy meeting.
Khalil said the initiative aligned with Islamic teachings on tree planting and environmental protection, noting that trees provide lasting benefits to humans and animals.
He cited the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), which encourage planting trees as a form of ongoing charity, known in Islam as Sadaqah Jariyah.
The cleric appealed to CITAD to provide tree seedlings for distribution to council members across Kano State’s 44 local government areas to encourage wider participation in the campaign.
CITAD One Million Trees Campaign Targets Northern Nigeria
Earlier, a member of the P1MT team, Buhari Abba, said CITAD launched the regional initiative in September 2026 to address desertification, vegetation loss and climate change across the 19 northern states.
Abba said the organisation was working with stakeholders, including the Kano State Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, to plant and nurture one million indigenous trees across Northern Nigeria within one year, ending in September 2027.

He explained that the campaign had an online portal, p1mt.ng, where members of the public could register their tree-planting activities to help CITAD document plantings and monitor tree survival rates.
Khalil commended CITAD for the initiative and urged residents to plant trees and upload details of their activities to the portal to support proper documentation and accountability.
