The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has shifted the commencement of the 2026 Commonwealth Games national trials by one day to allow athletes affected by adverse weather conditions in the United States to participate.
The trials, initially scheduled for June 20 to 22 at the Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) Sports Complex in Lagos, will now hold from June 21 to 23 at the same venue.
The decision was reached following an emergency meeting of the AFN board presided over by the federation’s president, Chief Tonobok Okowa, in Lagos.
According to the federation, the adjustment became necessary after several Nigeria-based athletes studying and competing in the United States were unable to travel as planned due to widespread flight disruptions caused by severe weather.
Heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and flash flooding reportedly affected parts of the US, including Atlanta and areas in Alabama, resulting in the cancellation of several flights.
The affected athletes appealed to the federation for more time to enable them arrive in Nigeria and take part in the trials, which will determine selection for Team Nigeria to the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
After deliberations, the AFN board approved the shift, describing the decision as one taken in the overall interest of the athletes and other stakeholders.
The federation noted that the athletes remain committed to representing the country and are making efforts to arrive in time for the competition.
It appealed to athletes who have already arrived in Lagos to show understanding, while wishing those still travelling a safe journey.
The national trials are expected to attract many of the country’s top track and field stars, who will compete for places on Team Nigeria ahead of the Commonwealth Games.
The AFN expressed optimism that the slight adjustment would ensure a more inclusive and competitive selection process and provide all qualified athletes with a fair opportunity to secure spots on the national team.
