TJ&GP Launches Campaign for Tax Reform in Kano State

The Kano Chapter of the Tax Justice and Governance Platform (TJ&GP) recently launched an advocacy campaign to tackle tax-related issues within the state.

On Thursday, Dr. Muhammad Mustapha Yahaya, the Executive Director of the Dispute Resolution & Development Initiative (previously known as DAG), led a delegation to meet with the Kano State Commissioner for Budget and Planning, Alhaji Musa Suleiman Shanono.

Dr. Yahaya underscored the TJ&GP’s dedication to fostering fair and equitable tax practices in Kano. He presented a policy brief to the commissioner, which detailed the strengths, weaknesses, and challenges of the current tax regime, along with suggested reforms for short, medium, and long-term enhancement of tax administration.

“We offered recommendations for the policymakers to consider and implement, with the ultimate goal of augmenting tax collection within the state,” Dr. Yahaya stated.

Commissioner Shanono expressed his support for the initiative, acknowledging the critical role of revenue generation in government operations.

He recognized the policy brief as a significant contribution and committed to submitting it to the State Executive Council for review.

He also advocated for continued partnership through the Ministry’s Director of Development Support Coordination.

Furthermore, the TJ&GP delegation visited the Kano State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Haruna Isa Dederi, to discuss similar tax reform objectives and propsed solutions.

Commissioner Dederi praised the TJ&GP for their efforts to fortify tax administration in Kano, affirming his ministry’s readiness to assist in crafting legal frameworks that encourage responsible fiscal management, transparency, and fair taxation.

Both commissioners were presented with policy briefs that delineated the existing tax system and recommended reforms.

These advocacy endeavors by the TJ&GP highlight the significance of cooperation between civil society and the government to achieve tax justice in Kano State.

ClockwiseReports  reported that both Commissioners received a policy brief encompassing the background of Kano’s tax regime, its strengths, weaknesses, challenges, and proposed recommendations for the short, medium, and long term.
