The Kano State contingent, Zainab Aliyu Muhammad, has been declared the winner of this year’s 38th edition of the National Qur’anic Recitation Competition, held in Damaturu, Yobe State, on Saturday.
Professor Muhammad Yalwa, the Director of the Centre for Islamic Studies at Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto, announced this at the closing ceremony of the event.
Zainab Aliyu Muhammad participated in the newly introduced 1st female category of 60 Hizbs, Tafseer, and Qira’at. She recited the versions of Imam Nafi’ul Madani, Imam Ibnul Kaseer Al Makki, Imam Abu Amir Al Basri, Imam Ibn Amir Ash Shami, Imam Asim Al Kufee, Imam Hamza Al Kufee, and Imam Kisa’i Al Kufee.
Other Kano contingents who showcased their power of Qur’anic memorization and recitation include Yusuf Ishaq, who contested in the 1st male category of 60 Hizbs, Tafseer, and Qira’at, and won the second position. Hafsat Yakubu and Usman Saminu Ashhab took the 3rd position in the 2nd and 3rd female and male categories (60 Hizbs with Tafsir and Tajweed, 60 Hizbs with Tajweed).

His Eminence, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, turbaned the winner of male categories, Gwani Ibrahim Muhammad Nasir from Bauchi state as “Gwarzon Shekaraa,” while Hajiya Halima, the (Ya Maira) of Damaturu, a senior sister to the Emir of Damaturu, turbaned the winner of the female category, Gwana Zainab Aliyu Muhammad, as “Gwarzuwar Shekara.”
The acting Executive Chairman of Kano State Qur’anic and Islamiyya School Management Board, Comrade Bala Baba Shu’aibu, said Kano state has championed the National Qur’anic recitation competition male category 12 times while winning the female category 17 times, including this 38th edition.
Comrade Bala added that Kano is the overall winner of the 38th edition of the National Qur’anic recitation competition held in Damaturu, where it won 4 out of 8 seats and also the overall in the history of National Musabaqah since 1986.
He thanked the Kano State Government and good citizens of the state for their prayers and support. “Kano State Government has provided us with all necessary logistics for the successful conduct of the event,” Bala maintained.
The 38th edition of this year’s Qur’anic Competition concluded with the presentation of prizes. Important dignitaries were in attendance, including the National Chairman of ANPP, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, representing the Nigerian President, Mr. Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and Governor of Yobe State, Maimala Buni, among others.
