North-Eastern University, Gombe (NEU Gombe), has announced a 50 per cent Founder’s Scholarship for students seeking admission into six science-based degree programmes, citing the emerging opportunities in the oil and gas sector following exploration activities in the Kolmani area of Gombe and Bauchi states.
The Pro-Chancellor and Founder of the university, Dr Sani Jauro (Dan Lawan of Gombe), announced the scholarship during the 2026 graduation ceremony of Pen Resource Academy.
He said the initiative was part of the university’s efforts to expand access to higher education while preparing young Nigerians with the skills required to take advantage of opportunities in the oil and gas industry and other emerging sectors.
The scholarship covers B.Sc. Petroleum Chemistry, B.Sc. Environmental Management and Toxicology, B.Sc. Industrial Chemistry, B.Sc. Microbiology, B.Sc. Biotechnology and B.Sc. Urban and Regional Planning.
Jauro said the choice of the programmes was informed by the growing demand for professionals in science, technology, environmental management and the energy sector.
He urged graduating students and other prospective candidates to take advantage of the scholarship, saying the university was committed to producing graduates equipped with relevant knowledge, practical skills and professional competence.
According to him, the emergence of oil and gas activities in the North-East presents an opportunity for young people in the region to acquire the skills required to participate meaningfully in the sector.

He said NEU Gombe was positioning itself to contribute to the development of the manpower needed to support the oil and gas industry as well as other areas of the economy.
The Pro-Chancellor further disclosed that the university was working towards establishing an Oil and Gas Competency Development Centre.
He said the proposed centre would collaborate with internationally recognised certification organisations to provide specialised training and globally recognised certifications for students and professionals.
Jauro explained that the centre would complement the university’s academic programmes by exposing students and industry practitioners to practical and industry-focused training.
He said the university’s broader objective was to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and workplace requirements by producing graduates who could compete effectively in the labour market.
The 50 per cent scholarship, he added, was also designed to reduce the financial burden of university education on students and their parents while encouraging more young Nigerians to pursue careers in science and technology.
The initiative, he said, reflects NEU Gombe’s commitment to expanding access to quality higher education and developing the skilled manpower required to drive economic growth in the region and the country.
