Nigeria’s leading shot put athlete, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, delivered another impressive performance on the international stage after securing a silver medal at the prestigious Ostrava Golden Spike meeting in the Czech Republic.

Mr Enekwechi recorded a season’s best throw of 21.43 metres in the third round to finish second in a highly competitive field featuring some of the world’s top shot put stars.

The event was won by Italy’s Leonardo Fabbri, who claimed gold with a throw of 21.91 metres, while New Zealand’s Tom Walsh settled for bronze with 21.26 metres.

The result continues Enekwechi’s strong run of form in 2026 as he prepares for major international competitions later in the year.

Earlier this month, the Nigerian athlete won gold at the Znamensky Memorial in Russia with a throw of 21.27 metres, finishing ahead of competitors from Mexico and Romania.

He also competed at the LA Grand Prix, where he placed fifth with a throw of 21.33 metres.

The Ostrava Golden Spike is regarded as one of Europe’s most respected athletics meetings and regularly attracts elite athletes from around the world.

Mr Enekwechi has remained one of Africa’s most consistent performers in shot put, a discipline that often receives less attention than sprinting and middle-distance events on the continent.

With another podium finish and a season’s best performance, the Nigerian appears well positioned for greater success in the months ahead.
