The Kano Film Institute has commenced training for 200 film practitioners as part of efforts to enhance modern digital film and television production skills in the state.
Speaking during the commencement ceremony on Tuesday, the Director of the Institute, Dr. Mai Gari Indabawa said the training aims to groom young practitioners in Kano who are eager to improve their knowledge of modern film and television production techniques.
SolaceBase reports that the Institute, which operates under the Steering Committee of the Strategic Committee for the Revival of 26 Entrepreneurship Institutes in the Executive Governor’s Office, is one of the 26 entrepreneurship centers established to promote youth empowerment and skill development across various sectors.
“Our primary responsibility is to train young practitioners who are passionate about filmmaking and want to upgrade their skills using modern digital tools,” he explained.
The Director disclosed that the Institute had earlier trained about 300 students in a diploma program and recently graduated another 90 practitioners within the last two months. He added that the new batch of 200 trainees marks another phase in the Institute’s continuous capacity-building effort.
“By January, we will admit another 200 participants so that the training continues in cycles. Our experience with the previous sets has shown that the students are serious, enthusiastic, and ready to learn. This will not only improve their knowledge but also increase the commercial value of their work, contributing to the state’s creative economy,” he stated.
The Director noted that the training is facilitated by a team of experienced lecturers, including professors, PhD holders, and seasoned film industry professionals, to ensure participants receive world-class instruction and mentorship.
Speaking at the event, the Executive Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, represented by the Special Adviser on Human Resource and Secretary of the Steering Committee for the 26 Entrepreneurship Institutes, Dr. Ibrahim Garba Mohammed, assured that the Kano State Government will continue to support participants even after the completion of their training.
He emphasized that the goal of the program is to ensure participants apply the skills learned to enhance the quality of their productions, while urging them to be patient and dedicated throughout the training.
The participants, according to him, include filmmakers, directors, actors, musicians, editors, directors of photography, and camera operators drawn from different parts of Kano.
One of the participants, Fati Baffa Fagge, said the training would be very helpful in improving her business. She noted that such training was something the industry had long lacked, but now that the opportunity has come, they are ready to seize it and make the best use of it.
Another participant, Habu Dahiru, expressed gratitude to the state government for giving them the opportunity to enhance their skills and knowledge, which he described as the backbone of their business.
He promised to make good use of the knowledge gained from the training and to share the experience with others in the industry.
