The Chief Judge of Kano State, Hon. Justice Dije Audu Aboki, has ordered the release of six long-term inmates during her official visit to correctional facilities across the state.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Friday by the Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Kano State Command, CSC Musbahu Lawan K/Nasarawa.
According to the statement, the individuals released had been in custody for extended periods due to stalled legal proceedings, missing case files, and a lack of active prosecution.
The statement further noted that Justice Aboki explained the decision as part of her ongoing commitment to decongest custodial centres and address systemic delays in the judicial process. She emphasized that justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done—especially for individuals who have remained in detention without trial.
“This action is part of ongoing efforts to reform and improve the administration of justice in Kano State,” Justice Aboki stated. She called for stronger collaboration among key stakeholders in the justice sector, including the Nigeria Police Force, the Office of the Attorney General, and the Nigerian Correctional Service, to ensure timely and fair dispensation of justice.
She also encouraged the released inmates to embrace positive change and become productive members of society. “You now have the opportunity to start afresh. Be ambassadors of peace and stay away from crime,” she urged.
Also speaking during the visit, the Controller of Corrections for Kano State Command, Ado Inuwa, cautioned the released inmates against reoffending.
He stressed the importance of rehabilitation and praised the Controller General of Corrections, CGC Sylvester Indidi Nwakuche, for his continued commitment to inmate welfare, particularly through vocational and educational programs aimed at reintegrating ex-offenders into society.
